The 5 Cabling Mistakes That Kill Warranty Claims in India

Structured cabling warranty claims are routinely voided in India — not because the hardware failed, but because of installation errors that violate the OEM's installation standards. We've seen ₹40L cabling projects fail channel tests because of mistakes that could have been avoided with a two-hour site walk.

Why warranty matters more than you think

Tier-1 structured cabling brands (Legrand, CommScope, Molex, Panduit) offer 20–25 year end-to-end warranties that cover both the components and the channel performance. That warranty is only valid if an OEM-certified installer did the work and the channel passes certification tests. Most Indian cabling projects are installed by whoever submitted the lowest L1 bid — certified or not.

Mistake 1: Bend radius violations on Cat6A

Cat6A cable has a minimum bend radius of 4× the cable diameter (typically 40mm). Every 90-degree corner cut tight, every bundle cinched with zip ties that compress the cable, every pull through a conduit that's one size too small — these all create permanent impedance mismatches that show up as return loss failures in Fluke DTX test results.

Mistake 2: Pulling tension without a break-out box

Maximum pulling tension for Cat6A is 110N (25 lbf). Pulling a bundle of 24 cables through a 400-metre conduit run by hand easily exceeds this. The result is stretched pairs and failed performance tests — months after the project is signed off and the contractor has left site.

Mistake 3: Unbalanced patch panel terminations

T568A and T568B are not interchangeable within the same installation. We regularly find mixed termination standards across floors of the same building — always the result of different teams working from different instructions. Every mismatched pair is a crosstalk source.

Mistake 4: Poor earthing on the cabinet

A data cabinet with an unearthed steel frame in a humid coastal environment (relevant for Visakhapatnam and the AP coast) will accumulate static charge that causes intermittent packet loss. Cabinet earthing is the last item on the installation checklist and the first to be skipped.

Mistake 5: No post-installation certification testing

The warranty is void without a Fluke or IDEAL test report for every channel. Many projects are completed without a single test run. The OEM requires certified test results for warranty registration — not just the installer's checklist.

What to specify in your BOQ

Include these three items in every structured cabling BOQ: 1. OEM-certified installation — ask for the installer's certification ID, not just "authorised installer" on their letterhead 2. 100% channel certification testing — Fluke DTX or equivalent, test reports handed over with the project documentation 3. OEM warranty registration — verified completion within 30 days of handover
